INSIDE AIDS

As a classic lateral movement, the shoulder-in is unique in that the horse is asked to bend one way and move away in the opposite direction. In shoulder-in (overleaf above), the horse is first asked to look right and move his shoulders right in response to the unseen, opening (right) rein. Just as he is about to leave the track, the inside leg must now act just behind the girth to nudge him laterally in the opposite direction. In other words the right leg asks him to move into the outside (left) rein, which will issue a gentle check to confirm his position and the placement of the forehand to the track.

This is a good three-track shoulder-in with Prazer nicely bent around my inside leg. The outside rein may either support the forehand or in certain cases help lead the horse up the track.
